Stonehenge trip 2006 After
picking up at various points along the way the first stop was a crop circle on
the edge of Savernake Forest. Lunch was arranged at the Barge Inn at Alton
Barnes after which there was a short ride to Knoll Down Cathedral of Trees which
proved to be very popular.
At Avebury there was a two hour stay for a look around the area and time for
afternoon tea.
West Kennet Long Barrow burial mound turned out to be one of the highlights of
the day with its impressive burial chambers.

On the way to Stonehenge there was yet another refreshment stop at Woodhenge
before travelling on for the main event of a guided tour inside the perimeter
fence among the giant stones of Stonehenge. Our guide was Elizabeth Keating who
gave us a brief history before we were let loose and watch the sun setting
behind the stones. (Our thanks to Elizabeth for her wonderful
presentation.) Everyone was very impressed with the size of the stones and
ingenuity used by ancient men on this site.
