Longbrook Camp Dowsing

Dowsers were involved in a survey at an archaeological site near Minsterworth, Gloucestershire during September and October 2006. Dowsers were from Slimbridge, South Herefordshire Dowsing groups and the BSD.

Remote dowsing showed nineteen Bronze Age round houses within the camp, four at the North end and fifteen at the South.  Five of these were located in the SW corner, four of these Bronze Age houses are quite small, but one was 10.3m diameter with a ring of internal posts and a central post. The hearth was offset from the centre and there was a wind break partition inside the entrance
An inner boundary enclosure was found inside the ditch perimeter of the camp and was a timber fence 2.3/2.5m high, details to be dowsed.
Two Iron Age round houses were found at the northern end, they were 4.3 and 3.3 metres diam., quite small. Adjacent storage pits were 1.8 m deep and 1.6m diam and contained vegetables.  Peter Golding and Rob Campbell found 3 larger houses near to the datum point dated to 270/280 B.C.  Peter’s pits had about the same dimensions and contained vegetables and/or grain and were covered. All were lined with branches.
